The new Paperpile (private beta)
We've made several enhancements to the Paperpile web app and extension based on your feedback: Sign up for the private beta
- The reference list and toolbar can now automatically adjust their size to fit better in small windows. You can make the 'My Library' panel smaller to keep things neat and bring it back by clicking the new “hamburger” (three line) icon.
- The dropdown menus for folders and labels have been redesigned for a more streamlined selection process.
- You can now type title:, author:, year:, journal:, or fulltext: directly in the search box for an automatic filter by the desired field.
- You can now select your preferred BibTeX entry type (@article, @unpublished, or @misc) for preprints in Settings > LaTeX and BibTeX.
- You can now paste any URL into the Paste references dialog to add a reference, not just those with an identifier.
- Improved the performance of highlighted text in library search results.
- Resolved an issue where review article counts were not displayed in the filter menu.
- Fixed a bug in the PDF viewer where the 'Back to Paperpile' button wasn't returning focus to the library tab.
- Addressed an issue where the citation styles dialog failed to show certain styles.
- Corrected a problem where copying search box text does not copy the text.
- Implemented numerous other bug fixes and stability enhancements to ensure a smoother, more reliable user experience.

- Our Safari extension is now available for testing. All the features you know from Paperpile on Chrome are now available on Safari too.
- “Pin” a folder or label in the browser extension popup to set it as the default location for newly added references.
- Improved highlighting of search results for special characters.
- The web app will now remember your preference for hiding or showing the label list in the sidebar across sign-outs and reloads.
- Enhanced the speed of duplicate detection in the browser extension, allowing for quicker visibility of green checkmarks on the extension popup and import buttons.
- Resolved a PDF tab ordering issue: PDFs now open adjacent to the Paperpile tab.
- Fixed a lag issue when dragging folders within My Library.
- Addressed an Escape UTF-8 character toggle issue in the BibTeX output options in Settings.

- New support for literature discovery tools Connected Papers and Litmaps. Save references directly to Paperpile as you find them in these applications.
- Notes on entries are now included in library search results. You can now search your notes attached to references in your library.
- You can now disable one-click reference import when the extension button is clicked in the browser. We’ve added a toggle button in Settings allowing you to turn this functionality on and off as you wish.
- You can now pop out the reference filters menu and pin it to the main library view.
- Enhanced discoverability of reference filtering and sorting options in the UI.
- Export options now include JSON files.
- When you save a reference from an online database like Google Scholar, clicking on “Saved” now shows the reference in your library.
- The “Add PDF” dropdown menu now includes “Attach PDF“, “Browse for PDF” and “Search Google for PDF” functionalities.
- Added the "Select" button and dropdown menu to the reference management toolbar.
- Added website and database links for references displayed in the main library view.

- Use Paperpile for Word without a Paperpile account or subscription. This makes it easy to invite colleagues to collaborate who don't use Paperpile (yet).
- Users without a Paperpile account can add citations in the following ways:
- Cite articles, preprints, books directly from all major online sources.
- Cite references from a local RIS or BibTeX file.
- Create references manually.
- Configure online sources. Depending on your preferences and on what you search most often, you can now enable/disable and re-order online sources in the citation dialog.
- New ways to manage the references in a Word document (go to the new "Document settings"):
- Import or change ownership of all references in a Word document.
- Add all references in a document to a label/folder in your Paperpile library.
- Export all references in a document to a RIS or BibTeX file.
- Improved speed:
- The initial loading of citations is now nearly instantaneous even on extensive documents with hundreds of citations.
- Formatting citations and bibliographies is now up to 2x faster than before.
- Fixed an issue that slowed down the opening and closing of Word documents on Windows.
- Various other speed improvements.
- Support small caps used by various citation styles such as Bluebook Inline.
